The sounds from squirrels in the house include scurrying sounds from them running around on the drywall in the attic above the ceiling or in the walls. You may hear the sounds in the attic or inside the walls. If you hear thumping in your attic at night it s most likely a larger animal such as a raccoon or opossum engaged in jumping from one area of the attic to another actively shoving or destroying something or dragging something heavy. Thumps are typically an indication of larger animals like opossums or raccoons.

If you hear noises in the attic during the day it s very likely from squirrels. If you hear rolling noises in the attic you most likely have a squirrel problem. When you hear a banging coming from the attic and are trying to determine the cause you are most likely dealing with one of these four animals. A rhythmic tapping noise in the attic can come from outside the attic.

Many times you can hear the noise or sounds in the attic or wall of the walnuts or acorns rolling around or being dropped down the wall cavities. Air passing through ducts and radiators can sometimes create a loud noise as can water passing through pipes. They may also decide to drum on a part of the house that has the right resonance to attract a mate. You may also hear light running or scurrying noises during the day.

Woodpeckers will often develop an interest in a home and will visit several times through the day to bore foraging and nesting holes in the siding. A loose attic vent or shutter on a window can make a banging noise in the wind.
