These joists are below the beam and are tied to it by 2x4. Roof joists may span continuously from one side of the house to another or may be supported on an interior bearing wall.

Ceiling joists of the first floor of a two story structure often serve as floor joists for the second floor. The first surface is unsurprisingly the ceiling the materials of which attach directly to the joists. They are the member that connects or ties the lower ends of rafter couples pairs.
